New Work

03 January 2008

Here’s some things i’m working on in the studio - getting back into drawing which tends to lead to my paintings.

Also a great quote by Einstein reflects how I feel about my paintings. Looking forward to seeing the Klimp movie which I read is out on dvd.

This is all new for me - so bear with me…..

Mural in kids room

19 January 2008

My sister and brother-in-law moved to a new (old) house and aunt Leigh (that’s me) was called upon to do their rooms.  Olivia got flying pigs and Stella got the rain forest.

Next week I’ll do Walking Egyptians on the wall going up the steps -  cool stuff.

Arts Alive - Infusion 2013

02 August 2013

Last night was the final exhibition of Arts Alive which took place at the Scranton Cultural Center.  Earl Lehman and I had a great group of high school painters from various Lackawanna schools.  I think they were quite impressed with the paintings they did which made a bold statement hung in a pentagon shaped tower.  I know we were proud of them - and glad we got to know them......

She said "make his shirt blue"  - a little rememberance of a face - the sort of thing artists  were constantly asked to do before the camera.

An Installation

11 April 2012

Pitch Fork and Gerber before heading to MacDonald Gallery

I'm excited about the show at College Misericordia, in Dallas, PA,  which opened today.  Showing with Nina and Skip in the main gallery with my works in a separate gallery gives the viewer a large range of what art is and can be.
The 'installation' idea came by co-creating with curator Brian Beneditti who wanted the look of the space to feel like my actual studio - hence there is a rawness not ordinary seen in a gallery like setting.  To not worry about framing was liberating..... like going without a certain under garment.....

UPDATE: The show was featured as a "Best Bet" by the Times Leader Guide! www.timesleader.com/stories/best-bet,133617

Blooming in the Basement

16 February 2012

                                     Studio view - February 2012
I always like the idea of the basement and attic as being symbolic of our sub-conscious.  In those areas there is great fecundity - like a day lily blooming out of the  dark, deep purple earth.

Art in a Setting

04 December 2011

Seeing 'works' in a setting always opens up the possibilities of how art can transform a space.  Here are three of my pieces in room very close to the Caribbean.

Beauty and Pain

"Shine"   48" x 72"  acrylic on canvas    Leigh Pawling

"One of my favorite stories is told about Renoir, the famous french painter.  Apparently, when he was older, he suffered greatly from arthritis, but he kept painting anyhow.  On one occasion his friend, Matisse, said to him, 'Renoir, why do you keep painting when you are in so much pain?'

Renoir simply replied, 'the pain passes, but the beauty remains.'"

Arts Alive Goes Green!

26 July 2011

This is the third year teaching painting in Scranton for "Arts Alive" with artist Earl Lehman. The theme is "Green" which high school students studying painting, mixed media, photography, dance, and performance interpret  in various venues throughout the city.  We all come together at the end of the intense month for a grand exhibition and production which will be on First Friday in August at the Scranton Cultural Center.  They are doing super work as always and took a moment from their creations for a group shot today. Luna (bottom right) is our mascot!  : )
